Special Issue – Micro and Nanotechnology In Medicine
By Nitish Thakor
This month we bring you an interview and timely articles from Thought Leaders at the recent EMBS Micro and Nanotechnology in Medicine Conference. The Conference focused on the translation of emerging micro/nano technology from the laboratory to the bedside. Our Newsletter features an interview and three articles based on talks given at the Conference.
In our featured video, Conference Chair Ali Khademhosseni speaks to us on his objectives for the conference, and the prospects for clinical applications of his field of work, tissue engineering.
Highlights of the Conference and descriptions of keynote addresses are provided in the article, “1st IEEE EMBS Micro and Nanotechnology in Medicine Conference Brings Together Leaders in the Field” by Rashid Bashir, Michelle Khine, & Ali Khademhosseini
The article, “Nanostructured Thin Films Aid Delivery of Promising New Drugs in the Body” by Russell F. Ross and Tejal A. Desai, reports on exciting results they have achieved in using nanoparticles to aid in drug delivery.
Nanotechnology also is featured in “Translating Biophysics to Reduced Healthcare Costs”, by Henry T.K. Tse, Dino Di Carlo, Daniel R. Gossett. They have used a microfluidic platform to measure physical deformation of cells, with the aim of providing an improved method for cancer screening.
We look forward to your active participation in this Newsletter. We hope that many of you will send us your comments and suggestions and submit cutting-edge scientific news stories, share emerging technologies, discoveries and breakthroughs for possible publication in future issues. Send them to us at lsnews@ieee.org.
