Standards for Life Sciences and Biotechnology

Standardization is undertaken to improve interoperability, reduce cost and increase safety. IEEE has a long history as a leader in the development of standards that govern the devices and functions related consumer electronics, telecommunications, and power generation and transmission. The IEEE Standards Association has a portfolio of over 900 active standards and more than 500 standards under development.

The convergence of engineers, scientists and physicians in the life sciences presents a new opportunity for standards development and application. Standards will be required to ensure the portability and security of electronic medical records; the interoperability of data collected from cellular, plant, organism and environmental sources; the application of sensor networks to monitor and track food, pests, diseases, drugs, supplies and people; and secure and reliable communication between emergency systems. With several active and draft standards in this area already, IEEE will continue to contribute its expertise to the Life Sciences.

The test results schema becomes a class of information that can be used within the SIMICA family of standards.

Description: This standard specifies how the MAC Service is supported by Virtual Bridged Local Area Networks, the principles of operation of those networks, and the operation of VLAN-aware Bridges, including management, protocols, and algorithms. Description: This standard defines the air interface for radiating transceiver radio tags using long wavelength signals (kilometric and hectometric frequencies, <450 kHz). Conforming devices can have very low power consumption (a few microwatts on average), while operating over medium ranges (0.5 to 30 meters) and at low data transfer speeds (300-9600 bps). Description: The building blocks comprising (i) network resource managers, (ii) device resource managers, and (iii) the information to be exchanged between the building blocks, for enabling coordinated network-device distributed decision making that will aid in the optimization of radio resource usage, including spectrum access control, in heterogeneous wireless access networks are defined. The standard is limited to the architectural and functional definitions at a first stage.
